Some of our clients attract a lot of attention as prominent online brands with high profiles. A marketerâ€™s dream â€“ until the attention takes the form of debilitating DDoS attacks and extortion.
Enter the Spring of 2014. A top client was preparing for the biggest weekend of their business year when their systems came to a smoking-tire, screeching halt. A distributed denial of service (DDoS). Someone, or some group, was holding the company virtually hostage, seeking money in order to free up access to their online services. Extortion.
With the looming deadline of the weekend approaching, it came down to two issues: 1) get functional, and 2) repair any damage the downtime did to their brand.
As the go-to resource for all things technical, the client came to us seeking help. Working intimately with the clientâ€™s leadership team, we were able to negotiate a last-minute workaround that allowed for a return to business, if only for a short period. All the while we had technicians working feverishly on a long-term solution. Once fixed, the extortionists were no longer able to execute the attacks and the crisis had been extinguished. But it left the company in a challenging state. Trust in the availability and integrity of the site had been damaged, and users were nervous.
To counter this, we launched a targeted PR and marketing campaign. In an attempt to address any concerns the users had, we provided direct access to our technical team, allowing them to discuss issues such as security and downtime with the end-users. While helping to correct the situation, our approach ultimately served to position the client as a responsive, transparent organization that made the security of their users their top priority. And while the client continues to experience sporadic DDoS attacks, their users no longer see any effect. The goodwill and respect earned through the process of dealing with the attacks has left company better off than they were before.
Business moves quickly. And while we would all love to be able to plan and strategize each step of our growth, we also know that sometimes this is simply not a reality.
This was the case for a new client that approached us when the opportunity to launch a new product at a tradeshow arose. Deadline? Twenty hours. We started the process by defining their goals for the launch and tradeshow, and worked backwards to identify what we could produce to accomplish these goals. In the remaining hours we were able to complete a comprehensive SEO review, write an entire website worth of content, develop surveys, and set-up and craft content for top different social profiles. The launch was a huge success, with social reach in the thousands on the first day.
